CLEAN THE CAMPUS TO RID OF AEDES

UUM ONLINE: A clean university, healthy campus community and zero-dengue were amongst the goals set out to be achieved in the UUM Zero AEDES 2018 Launching Ceremony at the MISC Student Residence yesterday.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim said the programme was aimed at ensuring the areas in Institutions of High Learning were free of dengue, apart from raising the level of awareness amongst students on the importance of prevention and curbing the spread of dengue cases.

"At times we hope others will do it for us, if we only expect the cleaners to clean the areas, Zero-Aedes will not take place as we have more than 16,000 students and 3,000 staff.

Zero-Aedes not only curb the dengue epidemic, but also keep check on the spread of the Zika and Cikungunya epidemic, if Allah wills it, the UUM campus community will be healthy," he said.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim also instructed that each student residence hall launch a ‘gotong-royong’ to clean up the student accommodation areas namely the MISC Inasis, TM Inasis and BSN Inasis in preparation for the visit from Auditors in conjunction the Public Institution of Higher Learning Dengue-Free Awards 2017/2018, scheduled on 18 March.

Meanwhile, a student of International Business Management programme, Ms. Dayang Ratna Syahira, 22 supported the efforts of the University, including the ‘gotong-royong’ to clean-up the campus ground.

She said a programme such as this would indeed educate the campus community on the dangers of Aedes mosquitoes which have become the main reason for the increase of dengue fever apart from that the programme would also inculcate good hygiene habits in life.
