LET'S GO PUNTING IN SINTOK RIVER!

UUM ONLINE: Punting refers to boating in a punt. The punt is a long, narrow and flat-bottomed boat with a square-cut bow and straight sides, designed for use in shallow waters. The punt is made of white pine, white cedar or cypress wood.

The punt is propelled forward with the use of a long pole made of spruce wood or aluminium and composites. The punter generally propels the punt by pushing against the river bed with the pole.

Punts were originally built as cargo boats or platforms for fowling and angling. According to the history of punting, the punt became very popular on the Thames, England between 1860 and 1880. In addition, around the 1900s, the punt became popular in Cambridge that is on the river Cam and on the river Cherwell in Oxford. 

It was in Cambridge that the first company devoted to providing pleasure punting, Scudamore’s Punting Company, was established by Maurice ‘Jack’ Scudamore in 1910. Other than in Cambridge and Oxford, punting is also popular in London, Durham, Lancaster, Canterbury and Yorkshire.

In conjunction with Discover UUM 2016, two punts were introduced to the UUM campus community and exclusively confined to pleasure trips on the Sintok River and the punts fit four passengers.  

Yang Berhormat the Minister of Higher Education, Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh, who present to officiate the launching ceremony of Discover UUM 2016, was taken on a punt ride while enjoying the unique view of the campus.

The two punts in UUM were named after the two well-known rivers in UUM namely the Badak River and the Sintok River. The punts were especially designed and made in Pulau Duyung, Terengganu. The punts were made of the Seraya wood, measuring 18 feet long and four feet wide.
