UUM MADE A DEBUT IN THE UI GREENMETRIC RANKING 2015

UUM ONLINE: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) made a debut in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2015 when it is ranked 45th place yesterday.

The UI GreenMetric Ranking is the first and the only ranking which measures each participating university’s commitment in developing an ‘environmentally friendly’ infrastructure around the world.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak expressed his deepest appreciation and gratitude to the staff members of UUM for their efforts in carrying out their commitments in order to gain this world recognition.

According to him, with this achievement, UUM is now ranked 9th in Asia, 7th in Southeast Asia and 2nd in Malaysia.

The UI GreenMetric has ranked universities throughout the world according to appointed indicators of campus environmental issues such as 'Setting and Infrastructure', 'Energy and Climate Change', 'Waste', 'Water', 'Transportation' and 'Education'.

"We have fulfilled all the criteria and the university is listed along with 407 other universities from around the world," he said.

Apart from that, he also urged UUM denizens to increase their awareness on sustainable development and environment protection of the institution.

He added that the university latest achievement would indirectly promote UUM as the 'University in a Green Forest' which also coincides with Discover UUM 2016.

"UUM will endeavour to the best of its ability to ensure the programme runs smoothly," he added.

He also expressed his hope that greater efforts would be made to further develop tourism sector as many places of interest waiting to be explored.

"Among the priceless treasures which can be found in the Sintok forest are trees which are hundreds of years old. The uniqueness of this particular type of tree rests in its size which is said to reach up to 10 hugs," he said.
