UUM VICE-CHANCELLOR DELIVERED A LECTURE AT THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON UI GREENMETRIC

UUM ONLINE: Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak received an invitation to deliver a lecture on the implementation of the green concept and the balance between green forest with development of the university at The 2nd International Workshop on UI GreenMetric in Depok, Jakarta, Indonesia, recently.

Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa delivered a lecture entitled "The University in a Green Forest - Towards Eco-friendly Campus" and shared his current experience helming the green campus of UUM with other participants.

The second international workshop regarding UI GreenMetric was attended by nearly 150 esteemed participants including the Rectors / the Presidents of the universities from around the world namely the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Pakistan, India, Japan, Korea and the United States of America.

The one-day international workshop on UI GreenMetric provides platform for the participants to exchange information and address the sustainability issues in their respective institutions and particularly to share the best practices in creating a sustainable condition in their universities.

The Vice-Chancellor also urged the entire UUM campus community to continue preserve the existing greenery campus while creating new initiatives that could make the campus as a liveable campus.

"Apart from the UUM academic excellence which demands provision of the resources necessary to support the excellence including the schools and facilities, we also recognise that the excellence entails care and preservation of our campus environment with its rich flora and fauna. Discover UUM 2016 is one of UUM initiatives to promote edutourism to local community as well as to the campus community," he said.

According to the Rector of the University of Indonesia, Prof Dr Ir Muhammad Anis, he said the "GreenMetric Ranking" was launched in 2010 and has drawn the attention of 301 universities from 61 nations.

"The ranking on environmental sustainability takes into consideration more than 40 indicators covering six main scopes, consisting of infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water and education," he said.

For the record, UUM secured the second place, ahead other universities in Malaysia in terms of the ranking. UUM was in the 6th place in Southeast Asia, 8th in Asia, and was listed as the world's top 45th university in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking for 2015 based on its rigorous efforts to promote campus sustainability and effective environmental management.
