UUM ONLINE: A total of 200 volunteers produced 17,920 notebooks, thus setting another entry in The Malaysia Book of Records as the Most Number of Booklets Produced in a Day, at UUM Sintok, recently.

This record was previously held by the Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) with 10,114 notebooks. This year, UUM managed to break the said record by 77.2%.

According to the Project Director, Thum Wei Mang, this project was organised by the Bursa Young Investor Club (BYIC) UUM in collaboration with the Bachelor of Philosophy, Law and Business Thinkers, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Changlun, Kedah-Perlis AIESEC Association and Enactus UUM.

Thum Wei Mang explained that, this Paplet (a combination of paper and booklet) project, aimed at raising the awareness about the importance of reusing paper before disposing it to ensure environmental sustainability.

"In Malaysia, over 3 million tonnes of paper was used, but less than 5% of the paper was recycled. Thus, the Paplet Project decided to re-use the paper and produce a marketable product called the Paplet," said the Bachelor of Business Administration (Logistics and Transportation) student.

The volunteers took around one month to collect the used paper from UUM, SMK Darulaman, SMK Sultan Abdul Halim, SMK Paya Kemunting, SMK Seri Mahawangsa, SMK Changlun and SJK (C) Kong Hwa.

The Paplet project was the brainchild of a Bachelor of Philosophy, Law and Business student, Chong Chen Fung, 21. The idea was originally inspired by a project conducted in a university in the United States and the Paplets produced were donated to autistic children.

Chong Chen Fung stated that, this is a very challenging project. Nevertheless, the volunteers were highly committed and many of them worked non-stop for 12 hours from 9.00am to 9.00pm to complete the project.

Also present at the event were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim; the officer from the Malaysia Book of Records, Cik Siti Johor; the Dean of the Student Development and Alumni UUM COB, Dr. Hendrik Lamsali; Deputy Dean of the Student Development and Alumni of the College of Law (PPA COLGIS), Dr. Mohd Na’eim Ajis, representative from SMK Changlun, Madam Aida and BYIC advisor, Mr. Afiruddin Bin Tapa.
