The Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) community is reminded to take the Syariah Maqasid values and apply them in the 'Live Green' and 'Living Campus' concepts.

Kedah State Assembly Speaker, Dato' Ahmad Kasim said there were five (5) principles of Syariah Maqasid namely maintaining religion, life, mind, heredity and property which remained at the heart of the concept of 'Live Green' and 'Living Campus' in the aspect of life and learning in a sustainable campus.

Dato' Ahmad Kasim believed that through exposure of the concept, the students produced by the university will be equipped with elevated soft skills.

He said campus residents would be exposed to a variety of activities based on Syariah Maqasid as an effort to become sensitive and proactive university denizens.

"This programme also gives everyone the opportunity to take care of the environment and to preserve the treasures created by Allah for the enjoyment of the next generation.

"It is also a kind of motivation and inspiration for all of us to continue to strive to be a person who is always in the disposition of preserving and caring for the environment," he said at the Green Awareness and Sustainable Development Pre-Launch Ceremony at the Foyer of the Chancellery.

He said the programme could also become a channel for university students to love the green environment, in fact he also expressed hope that the activities related to the preservation of the environment in the campus could be further expanded and made compulsory in student co-curriculum activities.

He said UUM was eligible to be a model not only at the national level, but also at international level in promoting the concept of 'Living Campus'. According to him the university can longer be considered as just a place to study and work, but also a place to live in a sustainable and lush green environment.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr Hendrik Lamsali said that the Green Consciousness and Sustainable Development programmes of UUM was an initiative aimed at improving the effectiveness of energy consumption, conserving resources and improving the quality of the environment.

According to him, in relation to the 'Live Green' tagline, UUM as a knowledge repository must always be 'Live Green' but to always 'Live Green' may not be an easy thing because green technology is simply not enough, but the value of sustainability in the university community as well as local community is needed.

He said UUM will continue to implement strategic initiatives through various teaching and learning activities, research, co-curriculum and environmental-based quality systems.

"UUM is the ultimate catalyst for this effort and the need to educate the community as well as the widespread call for sustainable development enables the university to embrace basic and moral responsibility in contributing to sustainable development and guiding the society towards a sustainable future.

"The implementation of the UUM 'Live Green' development will be organized on the basis of the preparation of Blue Print Living Campus 5.0 in conjunction with the UUM 2030 smart campus development which harmoniously incorporate the field of expertise and knowledge, the function of department diversity and multiple levels of UUM campus community with emphasis on joining the three main concepts namely the green campus, smart campus and Syariah Maqasid," said Assoc. Prof. Dr Hendrik who represented the Vice-Chancellor.

At the event, Dato' Ahmad and Dr. Hendrik flagged off participants taking part in the Green Cycling Event at the foyer of the Chancellery.
