RISK MANAGEMENT AWARENESS THROUGH RISK BOARD GAME CHALLENGE

The students of Risk Management and Insurance Seminar class were committed to spread the awareness on the importance of risk management and insurance to the community. In order to make learning as fun, a Risk Board Game was created. Applying  similar rules with any other board game, Risk Board Game is a 3-D game, where participants act as marker. With insurance and investment elements added into the game, the game transfer the knowledge on how insurance and investment work in the real life.

About 24 participants from various background were up for the challenge supported by 50 students of Risk Management and Insurance Seminar class. The program was held at Tapak Pesta Konvo, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in conjunction with UUM Convocation Week.

The briefing on the game especially the rules was given by Tan Lie Chien. The participants were then, divided into a group of five members guided with two facilitators each. Before the game start, time was given to the teams and their facilitators to plan their winning strategy. In the game, players need to decide whether to buy insurance to protect their properties and to they also have opportunities to invest in the stock market. Throughout the game, some risky situations were added to educate the players that risk is an uncertainty that they have to face. At the end of the game, some teams succeeded to accumulate wealth while some did not. Indirectly, they can also learnt the importance of managing their cash flows wisely.

  

Dr Arpah Binti Abu Bakar, the course instructor applauded the students for the innovation in transferring their knowledge learned in class to the community. This service learning project gave opportunities for students to develop civic engagement skills and at the same time enhancing their own understanding on the course materials. The program was also supported by lecturers in Risk Management and Insurance, Dr Diara Binti Md Jadi and Mr Shahrul Nizam Bin Ahmad.
