UUM AND KEDAH STATE GOVERNMENT TO COLLABORATE TO ENSURE SUCCESS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL

UUM is always ready to contribute its ideas, knowledge and expertise in order to effectively boost the development of the state of Kedah including in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030. Chairman of the Kedah State Chinese and Siamese Community Affairs, Science and Technology, Climate Change and Environment Committee, Mr Simon Ooi Tze Min said UUM had helped the state government as a think-tank where it had provided the much needed suggestions, insights and inputs.

“I relatively have little to say, I am however, would very much like to hear from lecturers who have expertise in their respective fields. I am very grateful to the organiser, Institute of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Thoughts (IPDM) for having this session.

"This initiative marks the commitment of all of us in working towards implementing a sustainable development agenda to reduce the negative impact of human activities on the environment," he said in the Dialogue Session entitled Appreciating the Kedah State Government's Roadmap In Realizing Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030.

He also shared information on the efforts carried out by the State Government in achieving SDG 2030 namely the implementation of the 'Kedah State Green Agenda' to further strengthen the implementation of green technologies and sustainable practices in an effort to drive Kedah's socio-economic landscape.

“Kedah has attracted many green technology companies comprising solar manufacturers and solar farms.

"The Kedah development plan for 2035 clearly underscores that Kedah State's development vision is concerned with environmental sustainability, to achieve a 'sustainable' state," he said at the IPDM Meeting Room, Convention Complex, UUM.

He added that one of the strategic objectives formulated was to maintain the preservation and conservation of the environment in planning state development by announcing Ulu Muda as a State Park in 2020.

In line with the launch of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Kedah State Government has shown a strong commitment to preserving local and cultural heritage, by seeking recognition of Geopark status.

The efforts to make the UNESCO Global Geopark Langkawi and Mount Jerai as the National Geopark that protects environmental treasures, historical civilization and unique geological features while enhancing the economic activity of the population through tourism activities

Meanwhile, Director of IPDM, Prof Dr Zakaria Abas welcomed the deans and guests to discuss, give and share views through the dialogue session.

“UUM will contribute by leveraging on its expertise in the development of Kedah state and IPDM will facilitate the various activities.

"For that reason, the lecturers will work on creating a blueprint for the living campus," he said.
