UUM STML RESEARCHERS HELP ENHANCE RICE YIELD

13 March 2013- Researchers from School of Technology Management and Logistics UUM College of Business managed to promote alterative rice cultivation method that can improve the use of idle land and rice yield in conjunction with the Kedah Regional Development Authority (KEDA) and Agro Belantik Corporation Sdn. Bhd. particularly for people in Sik.

The research and project done in KampungLintang, Sik also known as Projek Sri Lovely (Lintang Organic Valley) was led by Dr. Kamal Ab Hamid along with Dr. Siti Norezam Othman, Dr. Noorulsadiqin Azbiya Yaacob, Zakirah Othman, Dr. Norani Nordin and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shahiml Mohtar as Special Interest Group (SIG) advisor.

This Sri Lovely technique has been adapted from the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technique that has managed to increase rice yield which reached eight tons compared to six tons previously.

Dr Kamal said that the collaboration with KEDA and Agro Belantik Corporation SdnBhd has also successfully helped in winning the Gold Medal at the international level in the research entitled Innovation in Green Technology Management Organic Valley Case Study (Ladang Lovely) in May in Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the 23rdInternational Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) competition.

"We received cooperation from KEDA for arrangement of human capital development programme by encouraging farmers to participate in courses, seminars and visits, while Agro Belantik Corporation was responsible for cultivating abandoned farm land in Sik," he said.

In the meantime, the UUM Vice-chancellor, Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said, the achievements of the researchers and STML showed this Management University also plays an important role in the field of agriculture.

"I am confident that with this achievement which shows that the quality of our academic achievement at UUM has increased in terms of quality and quantity and in turn is ready to compete with researches from other universities and moves to achieve the status of Research University,"he said.

Also present at the project SRI visit were the STML Head of Department, Dr. NorHasni Osman and Nik Mohd Bald Zani Haddad Ibrahim from Research and Innovation Management Centre (RIMC).
