UUM RECEIVES COVETED RECOGNITION FROM GREEN WORLD AWARDS 2016

UUM ONLINE: The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, received a certificate and a trophy from The Green Organisation for UUM’s Global Gold Medal triumph in the Green World Awards 2016 for Education & Training, held in Bucheon, South Korea, in October 2016.

He accepted the award, which was presented to him by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof Dr Noor Azizi Ismail, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Meeting Room, yesterday morning.

In addition, Prof Dr Noor Azizi also handed the Vice-Chancellor a sheaf of related certificates awarded to UUM, namely, a certificate formally naming UUM as the Ambassador of Green World 2016, a certificate giving recognition to UUM as a Green World Leader, and a certificate signifying UUM’s triumph in the Green World Awards 2016 for its commitment to best practices in environmental protection and preservation.

UUM ONLINE: Seramai 380 mahasiswa lari dalam hutan yang menguji kekuatan mental dan fizikal sempena Sintok Adventure Trail Run 2016 di samping merancakkan Discover UUM serta Universiti Di Rimba Hijau.

Menurut Pembantu Belia Dan Sukan, Shukhairy Kamaruzaman, program anjuran Pusat Sukan Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) dengan kerjasama Kelab Kembara itu bertujuan menyihatkan badan sekali gus memupuk budaya cinta alam sekitar.

“Larian ini mempromosikan gaya hidup sihat dengan menggalakkan pelajar melibatkan diri dalam aktiviti mencabar selain menjadi terapi kepada peserta merehatkan minda setelah penat belajar dan mengejar dateline,” ujarnya.

KUTIP 200KG SAMPAH DALAM MASA SEJAM

Seramai 170 sukarelawan Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) terlibat mengutip sampah sempena program khidmat komuniti Trash Here di sekitar Jalan Bukit Hantu di Pualau Langkawi, Kedah baru-baru ini.

Pada program itu, mereka berjaya mengumpulkan lebih 200 kilogram (kg) sampah dalam masa hanya satu jam.

Menurut pensyarah universiti tersebut, Muhammad Fauzi Mokhtar, program anjuran Pejabat Pembangunan Pelajar dan Alumni Kolej Seni dan Sains (UUM CAS) dengan kerjasama Environment Idaman Sdn. Bhd. dan SW Corp. itu merupakan satu inisiatif untuk mengurangkan kadar sampah di sekitar Langkawi.

UUM ONLINE: Following its success of being listed in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, UUM again brought honour to the nation when it secured the gold medal at the Green World Awards 2016 For Education & Training, in Bucheon, South Korea, recently.

As the Global Gold Winner, UUM will receive the Green Apple trophy and the certificate and logo for Green World Awards winners. By virtue of winning this prize, UUM was also chosen as the Ambassador of Green World 2016/2017. The formal award presentation ceremony will take place in London on 11 November.

The Green World Awards is organised by The Green Organisation, an international body established in 1994 as an independent, non-profit, and non-political organisation, and it recognizes and rewards organisations that promote the best practices in environmental care around the world.

ELECTRIC PEDAL-ASSISTED BICYCLES (EPAB) PROMOTES GREEN MOBILITY IN CAMPUS

UUM ONLINE: Kuala Lumpur - Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) was among the six public universities in Malaysia selected to receive 200 electric pedal-assisted bicycles (EPAB).

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak received the EPAB on behalf of the university from the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Dato' Seri Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili during the Launching Ceremony of the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2016 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) this morning.

Yang Berhormat Dato' Seri Dr. Maximus said, the handing over of the electric pedal-assisted bicycles was part of the government’s efforts to promote the 'green mobility' initiative among the younger generation.

UUM ONLINE: Punting refers to boating in a punt. The punt is a long, narrow and flat-bottomed boat with a square-cut bow and straight sides, designed for use in shallow waters. The punt is made of white pine, white cedar or cypress wood.

The punt is propelled forward with the use of a long pole made of spruce wood or aluminium and composites. The punter generally propels the punt by pushing against the river bed with the pole.

Punts were originally built as cargo boats or platforms for fowling and angling. According to the history of punting, the punt became very popular on the Thames, England between 1860 and 1880. In addition, around the 1900s, the punt became popular in Cambridge that is on the river Cam and on the river Cherwell in Oxford.
